Cord Blood

The umbilical cord contains blood that is rich in cells known as stem cells.  Stem cells have the ability to generate new, healthy cells and tissues in the body.  Additionally, the  tissue of the umbilical cord contains other types of cells, known as mesenchymal cells which also have great potential to treat a wide variety of medical conditions.  Patients have the option to collect umbilical cord blood and/or tissue to store for private use or to donate to a public bank.   For more information, please click on the links below:

**Public cord blood banks accept cord blood donations for free. Most require the mother to register by the 34th week of pregnancy, and she must pass medical eligibility guidelines.
